A fiberglass pool is a single molded shell manufactured off site, trucked to your lot, and set into an excavated hole in one piece. It installs far faster than a gunite pool and typically holds water within four to eight weeks of the start of construction once permitted. A fiberglass pool in the Jacksonville area runs $55,000 to $95,000 in 2026 for a basic install, or $95,000 to $140,000 with upgrades.
The shell is manufactured at a factory, cured, and shipped whole rather than built in your yard. A crew excavates a hole to the shell dimensions, sets the shell on a prepared base with a crane, levels it, plumbs the equipment, and backfills around it. There is no rebar to tie and no concrete to cure on site, which is the main reason the install moves faster than gunite.
Fiberglass shells max out around 16 feet wide and 40 feet long, the practical limit for hauling one piece down a public road without a wide-load escort. Shapes are chosen from a manufacturer catalog rather than drawn from scratch, so the exact freeform curve, an extra-deep diving well, or a custom-length lap lane usually is not available in fiberglass.
Within those limits, manufacturers offer tanning shelves, built-in bench seating, and a range of depths, so most residential layouts have a matching shell.
Once the permit is issued, excavation, setting the shell, plumbing, electrical, and initial backfill typically finish in four to eight weeks, compared with 10 to 16 weeks for a gunite build. The deck, coping, and any screen enclosure still need their own time on top of that shell timeline.
The interior surface is a factory-applied gelcoat rather than a troweled finish, available in several colors and patterns baked into the shell before it leaves the plant. Gelcoat is smoother and less porous than plaster or quartz, so algae has less to grip and the pool generally needs less chlorine or salt output to stay clear.
A fiberglass shell is light relative to its size, and groundwater pushing up from below can lift or buckle it once the water that normally weighs it down is removed. We tell every fiberglass owner the same rule: never drain the pool. If service work requires lowering the water level, it has to be done in stages by a professional who is watching the water table.
On the construction side we guard against flotation with a hydrostatic relief valve at the main drain, a gravel base under the shell, engineered backfill placed in lifts as the pool fills, and a concrete collar around the edge that helps hold the shell down. Lots near the river, marsh, or beach with a high water table get extra attention during excavation and backfill.
Setting a one-piece shell needs a crane to lift it from the delivery truck over the house or side yard and into the excavation. Narrow lots common on Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Neptune Beach sometimes limit where the crane and truck can stage, which can affect shell size or add a rigging cost. Fiberglass cannot match a gunite pool for a fully custom freeform shape, an unusually large footprint, or a deep diving envelope, since every shell ships from a fixed mold. If your design calls for a tanning ledge in one spot, a spa built into the same wall, and a lap lane on the other side, gunite is almost always the better fit.
