What is gunite and why do most custom Jacksonville pools use it?
Gunite is a dry or wet concrete mix sprayed at high pressure over a welded steel rebar frame that has already been shaped to the pool design. A crew hand-finishes the surface while it is still workable, then the shell cures before plumbing, tile, and the interior finish go in.
Because the shape starts as bent rebar rather than a mold, a gunite pool can be any freeform curve, a strict rectangle, or an L-shape wrapped around a lanai. That flexibility is why most custom pools built on the First Coast are gunite rather than fiberglass.
